The Falling of a Giant Mill Chimney!
I got tagged in a tweet on Saturday saying that there was a demolition planned for a Chimney in Oldham. I had no idea this was happening, but I knew I had to go explore.
I love old industrial stuff, so if you know of anything cool near you. Do let me know, I would love to come check it out!
I went on the Saturday and did a little tour, then went back Sunday to see it fall. It was crazy.

You must do a stream on the old Mills in Preston. There's an area behind the prison that housed hundreds of cotton mill workers
There's a company called Tetrad that have restored a mill and use it as a showroom for very expensive furniture for the rich and famous

Ellenroad Mill at Milnrow in steam first Sunday each month is the mill chimney smoking at tge end of the film..worth a visit. My grandfather was night stoker at the mill back in the day, his job to stoke the boilers and keep them burning overnight ready for steaming at 6 am each morning.
Not a big fan of the old dynamite. That would have been Freds 91st chimney even in his 80s 💪

hey David Burnip guess what there is an old chimney in Melton Mowbray on Thorpe road where the old hospital was and its being turned into flats and houses. its fenced off but i think you can still admire it quite close up. let me know if your coming to take a look and i can come and show you where it is… bless you.

How is it possible that a grade 2 listed building can be demolished??? I always thought buildings were listed to preserve them and place them under much stricter construction regs? Baffles me that people will clap and cheer for historical buildings being destroyed.

As more northern towns lose their history, so a new generation loses connection with the town's history. And in the wider scheme of things….. there's less reason for people from other parts of the country to visit these towns.
If a place has nothing to offer, and no interesting history…..then why bother to visit it? Brutal, but nevertheless, reality. And so these tiens suffer even more, because tourists skip them and more people move out of them.
In your video about Bolton you did a piece about Fred Dibnah and the Barrow Bridge chimney. Being from Bolton myself (I think I saw him once in a pub near his house) this is my tribute to him. A scale model of the first chimney he climbed at Barrow Bridge.

It really made no sense to me when he said ''It doesn't matter whether I'm right or wrong, whether the market goes up and down. I'm good regardless''. People are really losing a sh*t ton of money out here. I personally have been buying stocks since the beginning of the year and yet nothing's changed, but I've been reading articles of people still in the same market pulling off over 350k in just a couple months. Its tough out here!

I met Fred Dibnah back in the early eighties. It was during a day out with my grandparents to Bakewell (I think?). Nice bloke. My grandad was in the Royal Engineers as a lad, so they had a good natter.
On your Bolton upload you mentioned having an interested in finding industrial history. If you head to the other side of Huddersfield from you, there's the National Mining Museum.
There's also the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, a touch to the south. You could probably visit both in the same day.
shame to see history go, but times go by and things must change. It's had its day.
