Vortrag “Empowering Excellence: Elevating Student Presentations with an Innovative Feedback Approach“ von Alisa Kasle-Henke, M.A., auf dem Tag der Lehre der Technischen Hochschule Augsburg am 09.11.2023.

Zusammenfassung des englischsprachigen Vortrags:
In numerous university seminars, student presentations have been a well-established common practice. Professors often view presentations as an effective means to engage and involve students actively in their learning. However, the educational value of this method depends entirely on the quality of the presentations. While some student presentations are truly outstanding, showcasing meticulous research, polished delivery, thoughtful design, and an impeccable structure, this is not always the case. Neither professors nor students want to endure lengthy sessions of students standing before a seminar, reciting from notes or bullet points, parroting information they may not fully grasp, perhaps even acquired from sources like ChatGPT. Poor presentations waste valuable time, causing fellow students to disengage and adopt a passive attitude.

Is there a superior approach to elevate student presentations to empower their excellence? Can educators guide students to excel and improve their presentations using a different strategy? What if the process of preparing and delivering presentations in universities could benefit both our classes and the students’ immediate learning, as well as their future prospects? By implementing an innovative feedback system, spanning from the assignment phase to the day of presentation and beyond, we can guide students to achieve greater results.

In this brief lecture, we will examine how a series of structured feedback steps can transform students into better presenters, regardless of their academic discipline. The ultimate aim of this feedback process is to empower students to effectively convey their research, present their arguments coherently, and captivate their audience with their presentations. The final measure of a successful presentation is the extent to which the audience retains the information presented when they walk out the door. Let’s abandon the practice of enduring forgettable, lackluster presentations and instead empower students to take their presentation skills to new heights. Our THA students are only able to be “shaping the future together” if we guide them to make an impact with their contributions in our classes today.
