Hey guys I’m planning on bikepacking New Zealand next year for about 4 months, sticking mainly to the tour Aotearoa route. We are flying into Queenstown and riding north, taking it slowly as it’s our first big bikepacking trip.
Just have a few questions:
– what was the free camping like in NZ? Is it ok to just camp anywhere as long as it’s not private property, and of course leaving no trace.
– any noteable routes to check out?
– is it going to be too busy on the main trail between jan and April?
– how is bike security in New Zealand ? Is it worth bringing a D-Lock or just a cable lock?
Also removed the orange mat off the front of the bike and have swapped out the rear rack 15L dry bag for a 20L backpack, so I can do some overnight hikes.
