▶ KIEL HASSELDIEKSDAMM
Hasseldieksdamm is a quiet residential district in the western part of Kiel, bordering Hassee, Russee, Mettenhof, and the city forest. It is considered one of the city’s preferred neighborhoods for families and commuters due to its peaceful atmosphere and good infrastructure. The name originates from a historic raised road that crossed marshy ground once covered with hazel bushes. Until well into the 20th century, Hasseldieksdamm remained sparsely populated and was largely characterized by farmland. Following World War II, however, extensive residential development transformed the area into a neighborhood of detached houses, terraced homes, and smaller apartment buildings. Unlike many other districts of Kiel, Hasseldieksdamm has very little industry or large-scale commercial development, contributing to its calm and suburban character. One of its best-known attractions is the Hasseldieksdamm Wildlife Park, a freely accessible enclosure where visitors can observe fallow deer, red deer, and wild boar in a natural setting. The district also benefits from its immediate proximity to Kiel’s city forest, with numerous walking and cycling trails leading toward Westensee and the Eider Valley. Schools, sports facilities, local shopping areas, and reliable bus services provide convenient everyday amenities, while the nearby B76 offers quick access to other parts of the city. Hasseldieksdamm successfully combines the advantages of living close to nature with the convenience of urban infrastructure.
