A stunning view over the water in beautiful Tampere, Finland! 🚲☀️
This clip is taken from the full-length video I filmed on that same day—August 8, 2024—when I visited this fantastic spot during my cycling trip. The weather was absolutely perfect, and I just stood there in awe of the magical, soothing view of the lake. Finland is truly showing its best side here! 🤩🌊
A bit of history and facts about Tampere:
Tampere (also known as Tammerfors in Swedish) was founded in 1779 by King Gustav III of Sweden. The city is beautifully situated on an isthmus between the two large lakes, Näsijärvi and Pyhäjärvi. Flowing between these waters are the famous Tammerkoski rapids, which powered the city’s early industry. Due to its massive textile and heavy industries in the 19th century, the city earned the nickname “The Manchester of the North.” By the way, did you know that the world’s very first commercial GSM phone call was made right here in 1991? 📱✨
Business and livelihoods:
Tampere is the largest inland city in the Nordic region, with a population of around 255,000 people (and over 330,000 in the urban area)! In the old days, “half the city” worked in large textile factories like Finlayson. Today, the old industry has given way to high-tech, information technology, research, and education. It was actually here in the Tammerkoski area that the success story of the giant Nokia began—as a wood pulp mill in 1865! Today, Tampere is a vibrant hub for startups, commerce, and IT.
Famous people from Tampere:
The city has produced many big names, especially in sports and culture. Among the most famous are the historic author and women’s rights advocate Minna Canth, as well as the legendary javelin thrower and Olympic gold medalist Matti Järvinen. The city is also widely known as Finland’s hockey capital and is home to proud teams like Tappara and Ilves 🏒🔥!
