Our man, Herby Bliem, of St Martin Chalets is one of Austria’s best-loved snow bike guides and instructors. A bit of a natural on the snow, here you can see him doing a quick demo for one of our guests. Snow biking may look a bit scary at first glance, but it’s actually pretty easy to learn. Using the slope to control your speed, it’s a lovely way to enjoy the mountain, and snow bikes can be carried on all of Lungau’s ski lifts.
The snow bike is actually an Austrian invention – first launched by Engelbert Brenter in 1949. Engelbert founded his company back in 1929 in Hallein, Austria, but it wasn’t until 10th March 1949 that he registered his invention, the ‘sit ski’ (also knows as a ski bob, ski bike and snow bike), under patent number 2790.
Today St Martin Chalets partners with the Brenter family, offering guests the chance to try, hire and/or learn how to ride snow bikes. Experience has shown us that they make an excellent alternative to a day on the skis. Many of our guests make use of them – whether they’re experienced skiers or beginners.
