After the obligatory photographs and final adjustments to our Lycra, we set off on our Gallic adventure under a bright blue sky and glorious sunshine. The day began gently along the smooth tarmac of the Suisse Normande cycleway, following the River Orne as it meandered through the countryside. We passed through Caen before continuing alongside the river into a beautiful wooded gorge, with the sunshine filtering through the trees as we rode. After lunch, the terrain became noticeably hillier, before we finished the day cycling through the Forest of Andaine and arriving at our first night’s stop in the lovely spa town of Bagnoles-de-l’Orne.
