Are gravel bikes just retro mountain bikes? They share a lot of the same characteristics: narrow bars, wider tyres and long stems.. But how similar are they? And have modern gravel bikes improved cycling? Si and Dan compare their old XC bikes against a pair of Lauf True Grits to find out.

  1. So to enjoy gravel, because mountain biking isn't everywhere the same or with flat easy trails as you portray here, we should just get our old 400$ hardtail out of the storage room and ride it. Yup alright , already doing that. Absolutelly no reason to throw 1200$ on a gravel bike. Also dont assume the majority of bicyclists afford to have a specific bike for each type of use to do their sunday fun ride. For many of us a hardtail and a generic roadie are the way to go. And if just one had to be chosen to rule them all, then it probably would be a Hybrid bike with 35mm tyre clearance , maybe a 50mm shock fork, disk breaks, 2×10 drivetrain and flat or drop bars according to the majority of intended use.

  2. No issues with assembly for me https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L but I could see where some might benefit from using an experienced bike assembler/mechanic. I'm an older rider starting back after a 10 year break. This bike exceeds my capabilities and has been easy to get comfortable riding. I'm mostly on easy trails with almost no street riding and have not been disappointed with the performance of the bike. My fitness level is far below what I previously rode with and because of that the mileage is going on the bike slowly. While I'm losing weight slowly, the bike seems to tolerate my 220 pounds just fine. The bike has been used by several family members ranging from 5'5" – 5'9".

  3. I really get a kick out the retro videos on GCN. More a feeling of frustration. At lease in this video there is an agnoledgement that old MTB can be equally fun as a new bike. Some prople find enjoyment is driving a sports car with a manual transmission. Some prefer a truck in an automatic.

  4. Convert a nice 1990's MTB to single speed or at minimum get rid of the triple geared crank and use it for Urban BMX cycling , I have more fun on My 1991 KONA Hei Hei urban cycling through the city than on any of my other bikes .

  5. Old school or new school, just get out and ride. I'm not racing and couldn't care less about the fastest time when riding gravel. I have a fezzari Fore Core3 carbon for speed.
