Cycling the River Bure | Horstead, Buxton & Coltishall Norfolk
Join us for a peaceful morning cycling along the River Bure in Norfolk, starting from historic Horstead Mill and exploring some of the beautiful riverside countryside surrounding Horstead, Buxton and Coltishall.
With the Norfolk countryside waking up around us, we leave Horstead Mill behind and follow quiet country lanes and riverside trails alongside the River Bure.
Tall trees hang over the water, reeds move gently in the breeze and the river winds peacefully through this beautiful part of Norfolk. With birdsong, wildflowers, old hedgerows and hardly any traffic, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing bike ride.
Parts of our route also follow the Bure Valley Railway, Norfolk’s narrow-gauge heritage railway running between Aylsham and Wroxham. Keep your eyes open and you might even spot one of the steam trains making its way through the countryside!
Around Buxton and Horstead, the River Bure is particularly beautiful. On a calm morning the water reflects the surrounding trees like glass, while ducks, swans and cygnets make the most of this peaceful stretch of river.
This isn’t a ride about speed, racing or breaking records.
It’s simply about slowing down, enjoying the scenery and discovering the quieter side of Norfolk by bike.
As the sun warms up, we continue towards Coltishall, where an ice cream beside the river is always a welcome stop on a summer’s day.
Eventually, we loop back towards Horstead Mill, bringing another relaxing Norfolk cycling adventure to an end.
