After a short tour around the Lake Hopfensee in the Allgäu, we ride to the next overnight stop on our bike tour: Bad Kohlgrub, the highest moor spa in Germany.

Our route from Füssen to Lake Hopfensee at first runs along the Lake Forggensee. The cycle path offers beautiful views of the mountains and Neuschwanstein Castle. Then we turn west and reach the idyllic Lake Faulensee. This moor pond is picturesquely located between forests and meadows in almost untouched nature. On the north side there are beautiful sunbathing areas and you could also swim in the Lake Faulensee. Since the weather is rather cool and cloudy today, fortunately there isn’t much going on.
Then the path dives into the forest. In the middle of the forest there is a monument to those who died from the plague in 1635, who fell victim to the Black Death during the Thirty Years’ War. Soon the forest opens up again and we see Lake Hopfensee against the impressive backdrop of the Allgäu mountains. And once again there is a herd of cows in a meadow just above the lake. This is the foothills of the Alps straight out of a picture book!
We cycle along the west side of Lake Hopfensee on a well-developed cycle path. The path leads through flowering meadows and there are always beautiful panoramic views over the lake and the mountains. Finally we reach our starting point in Füssen again.

The next day our bike tour continues. Now we no longer cycle along the Romantic Road, but along the Lake Constance-Lake Königssee cycle path, which runs along the edge of the German Alps. Our destination is Bad Kohlgrub, which is known for its mud baths. And again at the beginning of the stage we have a wonderful view of the royal castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, which lie beautifully in the morning sun! The cycle path now goes back towards Wieskirche. We visited the world-famous Pilgrimage Church of Wies three days ago https://youtu.be/zgE7btyff9k. Shortly before Wies we turn off onto the so-called Königsstraße (Kings Road), an unpaved cycle path that leads through a wild nature reserve. “Unpaved” also means that we suddenly find ourselves in front of the Lähnbach creek and have to cross it through the water and on slippery gravel. With the bikes packed it’s a little adventure! We then take our lunch break next to a romantic stream and listen to the babbling of the small stream.
Then we reach the Ammergau Alps, named after the river Ammer, which we also cross, but this time on a bridge 😊. And now we are in Bad Kohlgrub, a tranquil health resort.
Bad Kohlgrub with its magnificent farmhouses decorated with Lüftl paintings is well worth seeing. Lüftlmalereien are fresco paintings on the facades of houses. There are often religious motifs with moralizing sayings that emphasize the finiteness of life.
The parish church of St. Martin is a work of Rococo and is reminiscent of the style of the nearby Church of Wies.
Another interesting church is the Roch Chapel in the former plague cemetery, which was built by the survivors as a thank you after the plague of 1633/1634.
But Bad Kohlgrub is best known as a moor spa. We visit the moor nature trail and learn a lot of interesting facts about the healing power of the moor. The lonely path leads through the forest and past flowering meadows to a picturesque resting place at a moor pond, where ducks cavort and we are swarmed by dragonflies.

The next stage of our bike tour will take us to Murnau am Staffelsee.
