🇩🇪 Why was Germany divided into East and West? And did ordinary Germans actually want it?
In this video, we are crossing into Bad Helmstedt, where many residents didn’t even know there was a village on the other side because it wasn’t shown on the map during Germany’s division.
After World War II, Germany was split into two countries because the victorious powers had different political systems.
🔹 West Germany became a democratic country with a market economy, supported by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.
🔹 East Germany became a communist state under Soviet influence.
But were the citizens in support of this division?
For the most part, no. Ordinary Germans were not asked whether they wanted their country divided. The decision was made by the Allied powers after the war. Many families, friends, and communities suddenly found themselves living under different governments, separated by borders they had never chosen.
In 1961, the Berlin Wall was built to stop people from escaping from East Germany to the West. For nearly three decades, families, friends, and communities remained separated.
Everything changed on 9 November 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell. Less than a year later, on 3 October 1990, Germany became one country again.
Today, Germany stands as a reminder that even the deepest divisions can be overcome with time, courage, and hope.
