In this video, professional mountain biker @AndiSchuster takes us on a varied cycling tour through Bavaria. Together with his wife Dany, Andi rides an e-bike from Kelheim to Berching. The Main-Danube Canal bike tour passes through the Altmühltal Nature Park between Regensburg, Ingolstadt and Nuremberg, combining impressive scenery with historic towns and numerous attractions directly along the route.
The stage featured here, from Kelheim to Berching, covers around 56 kilometres, depending on the exact route chosen. Much of it follows the Altmühl River and the Main-Danube Canal.
Before the actual Main-Danube Canal bike tour begins, Andi and Dany take a special detour to Weltenburg Abbey. The route leads through the Weltenburg Narrows, also known as the Danube Gorge. Between Kelheim and Weltenburg, the Danube has cut deeply into the distinctive limestone cliffs of the Bavarian Jura. The narrow rocky passages and cliff faces rising up to 70 metres make this section one of the region’s scenic highlights.
At the end of the detour, Weltenburg Abbey sits directly on the Danube. Its documented brewing tradition dates back to 1050. Alternatively, the Danube Gorge can also be experienced on a boat trip between Kelheim and Weltenburg.
They then return to Kelheim and continue towards Essing. Right at the start, the route offers a beautiful view of the Befreiungshalle (Liberation Hall). Numerous other highlights follow along the way.
Most of the tour follows easy-to-ride paths and can be completed on either a conventional bicycle or an e-bike. In Andi and Dany’s view, the route is generally suitable for families as well. However, given the overall distance, fitness, cycling experience and possible breaks should be taken into account when planning.
Anyone planning a multi-day cycling tour along the Main-Danube Canal will find various places to eat and stay along the route. Beilngries is a good option for an earlier stage destination. In this video, Andi and Dany continue on to Berching, a medieval town that provides a fitting end to the day’s stage.

For the journey and safe transport of the e-bikes, Andi uses an ORIS TRACC FIX4BIKE® bike carrier. Developed by ORIS, the FIX4BIKE® system features two additional pins below the tow ball. This allows the bike carrier to align itself automatically when mounted and lock securely onto the towbar.
The bike carrier sits securely and cannot twist, while installation and removal take only a few simple steps.
