The Race That Wasn’t.
Thousands of athletes travelled from around the world to the beautiful French Riviera with one goal… to become an IRONMAN. Months, and in many cases years, of training had all been leading to race day in Nice.
Then nature had other plans.
With southern France in the grip of an unprecedented heatwave and temperatures expected to climb beyond 40°C, local authorities made the incredibly difficult decision to cancel both IRONMAN France Nice 2026 and IRONMAN 70.3 Nice, putting athlete safety ahead of everything else. It was a heartbreaking moment for competitors, families, volunteers and organisers who had invested so much into one unforgettable weekend.
In this episode, I walk the famous IRONMAN Nice course, taking you along the iconic Promenade des Anglais, through the transition area and finish line that, sadly, never welcomed a single finisher. We’ll explore the route, the atmosphere around the city, and imagine what race day could have looked and felt like.
Sometimes the greatest stories in sport aren’t about crossing the finish line. They’re about resilience, disappointment, and the determination to come back stronger.
If you were one of the athletes affected, or you’ve ever dreamed of racing IRONMAN Nice, I’d love to hear your story in the comments below.
