In 1903, 60 riders gathered outside Café Au Réveil Matin in Montgeron, France, for a race no one knew would become legendary.

Henri Desgrange and Géo Lefèvre had bet everything on an ambitious idea: six stages, 2,428 kilometers, and a route across France before returning to Paris.

If the riders failed, the logistics broke down, or the public lost interest, the experiment would end there. Instead, the first Tour de France became the beginning of one of the world’s greatest sporting traditions.
