It started with a simple pedal from my home in Ramsgate to the railway station.
My journey involved a multi modal challenge and quickly turned into a cross border expedition. After catching the ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, I navigated the Vélomaritime (EuroVelo 4). Cycling through Dunkirk, I crossed into Belgium near De Panne and hopped on a series of trains through Ghent and Welkenraedt to finally arrive in Aachen, Germany.
This is the story of a long travel day by bike, ferry, and train to reach the start of one of Europe’s most iconic cycle routes: the Vennbahn.
