Germany’s biggest East Frisian island sits less than two hours from the Dutch border, and most people driving past on the A31 have never set foot on it.
What makes Borkum different from what you’d expect of a North Sea island: it’s green. Dunes, forests, dog roses, cycling routes through landscapes that look nothing like the flat grey coast you came from. The beach is enormous. The pace is something else entirely.
It works as a day trip without a car — ferry in, island train to town, bike or walk the rest. No driving, no logistics. That’s the point.

Ferry + catamaran return from Emden, 2 people — 85€
Parking in Emden — 3.60€ all day
