The Global Combat Air Program, or GCAP, is a trilateral defense initiative launched in 2022 by the United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan. Together, these three nations are developing a sixth-generation stealth fighter jet designed to enter service by 2035 and defeat aerial threats well beyond 2040. This is one of the most ambitious international defense collaborations in modern history.
The Program is managed through GIGO, the GCAP International Government Organization, which has awarded its first major contract to Edgewing — a joint venture equally owned by BAE Systems, Leonardo, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Company. Headquartered in Reading, England, Edgewing leads design, engineering, airworthiness, and certification for the aircraft’s entire life cycle. Rolls-Royce, IHI, and Avio Aero are jointly developing the propulsion system, while Leonardo, Mitsubishi Electric, and ELT Group are building the advanced sensing and communications suite known as ISANKE.
GCAP is more than a fighter jet — it is a strategic industrial alliance set to create tens of thousands of skilled jobs and generate economic impact across decades in Europe and the Indo-Pacific. Subscribe now so you never miss our in-depth defense and aerospace coverage.
