I bought this bike from an auction a couple of weeks ago ($175), along with a lovely vintage Peugeot ($100) – both in amazing condition. My husband had a disagreement with a curb a few months back and busted his 1986(?) centennial version Peugeot in three places. He only broke himself in two places. He rode that bike for 40 years – bringing it with him from Ireland when we married ( in California now). I called it his Pony. Anyway, I was hoping one of the bikes would suit him, or could be sold for profit if not. He is used to a 52cm frame.
As it happens, he can ride both, but has found the Klein “rides a wee bit bigger” than is totally comfortable- meaning the seat height and pedals are great, but his 5’6” body is stretched a little far to the handle bars. I don’t know much about it, honestly, but it is a lovely bike. I am trying to determine what year the bike was built and how being a “test bike” might affect its collectibility. I’m assuming it is one sent by manufacturer to the shops for customer test drives? There is a code under the wheel lock lever – QU 722. I cannot find any other numbers.
While my husband continues the internal debate about whether he will learn to ride more laid out in order to ride this beauty, or if he will cozy up to the Peugeot (or both!), I would love to learn about this “Pony” and what its history might be. I found a magazine article about the Quantum from 1986, but I don’t know what year this one is. Any guidance is appreciated!
