Sarlat-la-Canéda is one of the most atmospheric historic towns in the Dordogne and the Périgord Noir. The town is known for its medieval streets, stone houses, old squares and an exceptionally rich architectural heritage. According to the local tourism office, Sarlat is known for having one of the highest densities of listed historic buildings in France.
