Music Credits: Falling Down
Adam Toupalik was leading the Under-23 race at the 2016 Cyclo-cross World Championships after a grueling battle through mud and freezing conditions. As he approached what he believed was the finish line, he looked over his shoulder, saw a gap to the riders behind him, and became convinced he had secured the biggest victory of his career. He raised his arms, pointed to himself, and celebrated in front of the crowd, unaware that he had actually completed the penultimate lap. After hearing spectators shout “last lap,” he’d mistaken where he was in the race and only realized his error as the other riders sped past him.
Determined to salvage the race, Toupalik immediately chased back and produced an incredible comeback, fighting his way into the lead again on the actual final lap. After everything that had happened, it looked as though he might still complete one of cycling’s greatest recoveries. But with the finish line finally in sight and exhaustion setting in, Belgian rider Eli Iserbyt launched one last sprint. In the final few meters, Iserbyt surged past Toupalik to take the world title, leaving Toupalik to cross the line in second after one of the most heartbreaking finishes in cycling history.
