Using the Pure ‘relations’ feature to support the recording of practice-based research outputs, and lessons for impact
The University of Dundee research community encompasses a wide range of research disciplines, which presents interesting challenges when it comes to recording and evidencing outputs, activities, and impact. This is particularly true for our research practitioners, the majority of whom are based in our School of Art and Design. For those involved in practice-based or practice-led research, demonstrating the robustness and impact of each component can be challenging, especially during internal and external research assessment exercises.
As the research culture aligns more closely with global trends in responsible research assessment, it’s becoming increasingly important to acknowledge the various types and formats research outputs can take, as evident in institutions that submitted multi-component outputs (MCOs) for REF2021.
Drawing on the lessons learned from REF2014, the #UniversityofDundee adopted an approach to creating MCO records that relies on the “relations” feature in Pure. During the REF2021 submission period, we began creating records for research identified as potential MCOs. Looking ahead to the REF2028 submission, we’re piloting a process that combines our annual internal research assessment exercises with this Pure functionality. We ask researchers to identify research early on that could be submitted as an MCO and incorporate the need to produce a research timeline and narrative. This information is then recorded on a “keystone” MCO record.
This process was developed in conjunction with our review of how we record impact in Pure. We realized that a similar approach could be used to navigate recording evidence of impact, helping us reframe how the impact template can be used and developed to assist institutions in recording impact.
This presentation will include examples of MCO records and demonstrate how this approach can be applied to impact records, outlining the benefits and identifying challenges.
