In this 5-minute clip, I take you on a small part of my longer bike ride in Hammerfest – the city I come from, and which always brings back memories when I return. You can find the entire long ride on my channel @bikerfrode, along with many other films from both Norway and Sweden πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈπŸ‡³πŸ‡΄πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ

🌍 A little about Hammerfest – the world’s northernmost city (according to many!)
Hammerfest is located in the very north of Norway and has around 11,000 inhabitants. The city received city status as early as 1789, and has a dramatic history – among other things, the entire city was burned down during the forced evacuation in 1944, and rebuilt after the war. Today, Hammerfest is known for its Arctic cultural life, strong identity and a mix of modern industry and traditional coastal life.

🎭 Culture and city life
The city has an active cultural life with concerts, festivals and performances. In the middle of the city center you will find the Arctic Cultural Center (AKS) – a modern cultural center that houses a cinema, theater, concerts and art. It is one of the most striking buildings in the city and an important gathering point for both young and old.

🏫 Schools and work life
Hammerfest has several schools, including Breilia School, which I cycle past in this clip. The city’s most important industry today is energy and industry, especially related to MelkΓΈya and LNG production. Historically, fishing and shipping have been the mainstay of the local community – and much of the city’s identity is still linked to the sea.

πŸš΄β€β™‚οΈ About the actual trip in this clip
I start on Fuglenesveien, one of the main roads into the city center. Here I pass a gas station that is clearly under reconstruction. Even though the weather isn’t at its best – light rain, low fog and around 12 degrees – it’s nice to see others out: a jogger and someone out for a walk. Typical Hammerfest weather, but also typical Hammerfest people: always out no matter the weather 🌧️πŸ’ͺ

Then I take off and cycle up towards Breilia School, the junior high school in Hammerfest. I went here myself in my time, so this area means a lot to me. The ride continues down towards Storvannet, a popular hiking area for both families with children and exercisers.

Straight ahead we also see the iconic Hestesko Block (BYBO). According to local stories, it was Northern Europe’s largest apartment block when it was built in the 1960s. Whether that’s true or not is hard to say – but it’s certainly big πŸ˜„

In this film, I’ve also included maps showing my entire long-distance ride in Hammerfest. You can find the full film on my channel @bikerfrode.
