EuroVelo 6 Detours is a curated selection of destinations and attractions developed within the Active2Public Transport project, supported by the Interreg Danube Region Programme co-funded by the European Union.
The selection highlights attractions located in the wider vicinity of the EuroVelo 6 cycling route, which can be reached by combining cycling with public transport options such as trains, buses, or other local connections.
All featured locations are generally accessible within approximately one to two hours from the main EuroVelo 6 corridor, offering easy and sustainable opportunities for short detours beyond the cycling route.
The aim of this selection is to promote integrated and sustainable mobility by connecting cycling infrastructure with public transport networks, making a wider range of cultural, natural, and historical attractions more accessible to cyclists and visitors.
Reachable in around 30 minutes by train from Budapest on the EuroVelo 6, the Royal Palace of Gödöllő is the largest Baroque palace in Hungary, built in the 1730s by Count Antal Grassalkovich and given in 1867 as a coronation gift to Emperor Franz Joseph and his beloved wife Queen Elisabeth, Sisi, with restored royal apartments, an eighteenth-century Baroque court theatre, a 26-hectare landscape park, the historic Palm House, and a permanent exhibition dedicated to Hungary’s most romantic queen.
