Many famous bicycle brands today are owned by large corporate groups, investment companies, or global conglomerates. But some bike brands have taken a different path.
In this video, I look at unique bicycle brands that started as family businesses and are still strongly connected to the families that founded them. These are brands where the name on the frame still carries a real family story, often built over several generations.
We look at legendary names such as De Rosa, Basso, Pearson, BH Bikes, and ROSE Bikes — from Italian racing workshops and World Championship history, to Victorian British bicycle roots, Basque industrial manufacturing, and German mail-order cycling success.
You’ll hear how Ugo De Rosa built frames for some of cycling’s biggest names, how Basso grew from Alcide Basso’s small workshop, why Pearson is recognised as one of the oldest bicycle businesses in the world, how BH Bikes moved from firearms manufacturing to bicycles, and how ROSE Bikes grew from a local shop into a major modern bike brand.
Family ownership does not automatically make a bicycle brand better, but it does make the story behind the bike more personal. These brands carry heritage, passion, racing history, technical knowledge, and decades of family commitment.
