Ipswich Grand Opening Race – Landseer Park, November 2nd, 1980 (from the Jarvis Archives)

The first-ever race held by Ipswich BMX Club (known as the Witches back then) took place at Landseer Park, Ipswich, on one of the country’s first purpose-built tracks, just three months after the first official race at Redditch on August 30th, 1980.

Dave Bickers and Barry Scott-Webb, along with Bryan Potter, were key figures behind the construction of the track and the club. A few months later, another track was built, and a race was held in December at the Coddenham Bickers track, six miles outside of town.

In this clip, British BMX Hall of Fame 2024 inductee Geoff Wiles explains what BMX racing is all about.
