Das Kieler Studentendorf liegt im Stadtteil Wik nahe der Christian-Albrechts-Universität und gehört zu den bekanntesten studentischen Wohnanlagen der Stadt. Es entstand in den 1960er-Jahren in einer Zeit stark wachsender Studierendenzahlen und sollte modernen, gemeinschaftlichen Wohnraum für junge Menschen schaffen. Anders als klassische Wohnheime wurde das Studentendorf als eigenständige kleine Siedlung konzipiert, mit mehreren niedrigen Gebäuden, viel Grün und gemeinschaftlich genutzten Bereichen. Die Architektur orientiert sich an funktionalen Ideen der Nachkriegsmoderne und setzt auf offene Wege, Innenhöfe und eine lockere Bebauung. Das Gelände vermittelt dadurch eher den Eindruck eines kleinen Campus als eines gewöhnlichen Wohnviertels. Viele Studierende schätzen die vergleichsweise ruhige Lage zwischen Universität, Förde und den Grünflächen der Wik. Gleichzeitig ist das Studentendorf durch Busverbindungen und Fahrradwege gut an die Innenstadt angebunden. Über Jahrzehnte entwickelte sich hier eine eigene Wohnkultur mit internationalen Bewohnern, studentischen Veranstaltungen und gemeinschaftlichen Aktivitäten. Gemeinschaftsräume, Lernbereiche und Freizeitangebote prägen bis heute das soziale Leben der Anlage. Durch die Nähe zum Unicampus, zum Sportforum und zur Kiellinie gehört das Studentendorf zu den gefragtesten studentischen Wohnorten in Kiel. Gleichzeitig zeigt sich hier ein Stück Kieler Bildungsgeschichte, da die Anlage eng mit dem Ausbau der Universität und dem Wandel Kiels zur Hochschulstadt verbunden ist.
The Kiel Studentendorf is located in the district of Wik near Kiel University and is one of the city’s best-known student housing complexes. It was established during the 1960s, a period of rapidly increasing student numbers, and was designed to provide modern and community-oriented living space for young people. Unlike conventional dormitories, the Studentendorf was planned as a small independent settlement with several low-rise buildings, generous green areas, and shared communal spaces. Its architecture reflects the functional ideas of post-war modernism, emphasizing open pathways, courtyards, and loosely arranged structures. As a result, the area feels more like a compact campus environment than a typical residential neighborhood. Many students appreciate the relatively quiet location between the university, the fjord, and the green spaces of Wik. At the same time, the Studentendorf is well connected to the city center through bus routes and cycling infrastructure. Over the decades, the area developed its own distinctive culture shaped by international residents, student events, and communal activities. Shared lounges, study areas, and recreational facilities continue to play an important role in daily life. Due to its proximity to the university campus, sports facilities, and the Kiellinie waterfront, the Studentendorf remains one of the most desirable places for students to live in Kiel. It also represents an important part of the city’s educational history, closely linked to the expansion of Kiel University and Kiel’s transformation into a major academic center.
