The third day of cycling King Alfred’s Way, a Cycling UK created, mostly off-road, route in a 220 mile loop from Winchester.

I started from the campsite at Pangbourne around 07:30 and quickly found myself riding along the Thames into Reading.

As it was fairly early on a Sunday morning it was very straightforward to negotiate the route through the centre of the town, back onto a path along the river Kennett.

There was a bit of care required to get over the A33 before the route headed south along quieter roads and paths.

I got to Fareham after 40 miles, around 2:00 PM but I knew there was a fair bit of climbing ahead.

The route took in some beautiful sites at Frensham Common and the Devil’s Punchbowl. But I found it very time consuming to locate the correct trails in a number of places as the day wore on and eventually I decided to take a road route to the campsite.

It was after 9:00 PM when I got there but there was loads of space and I had a good night’s sleep.

72 miles ridden, 4,206 ft climbed
