In 2010, Simon Schnetzer quit his dream job at the United Nations, got on a bicycle, and spent two months riding across the country — asking hundreds of young people just two questions:
How is your life? And how could it be better?
What he found: everyone had their discomforts. And almost all had become experts at living with them rather than overcoming them.
In this talk, youth researcher and keynote speaker Simon Schnetzer shows why togetherness is the most powerful tool we have to transform discomfort — and why we’re urgently missing it. Simon Schnetzer researches how young people think, live, and work—and translates these insights clearly for stages and organizations. He is well known as the co-author and editor of the annually published trend study “Jugend in Deutschland” (“Youth in Germany”), which provides representative analyses of the attitudes, values, and political views of 14–29-year-olds. The recent 2024 and 2025 editions take a deeper look at topics ranging from mental health and work to politics and digitalization. With clear, practical recommendations, he helps leaders attract, lead, and retain the younger generation. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
