Back out on the roadbike for the first proper ride of the year—and no easing into it… straight into the hills.
And you know what they say, if you want to get good at hills – do more hills!
This 36-mile loop takes me from Colchester out through the Colne Valley towards the Stour Valley, passing through Chappel, Wakes Colne, Bures, Nayland, Boxted, Dedham and Ardleigh before heading home. It’s a route that looks beautiful on paper… but throws in a few technical climbs to keep you honest.
If you’re wondering how to get better at climbing on the bike, there’s no secret formula—ride more hills. Simple as that. This ride is exactly that: no shortcuts, just getting stuck in, finding a rhythm, and building strength the hard way.
Also my first outing this year on the trusty Giant TCR, so a bit of a reality check for the legs… but nothing beats being back out on the road.
If you’re getting back into cycling, or trying to improve your climbing, this one’s for you.
