In 1817, German inventor Karl Drais introduced the “Draisine,” the world’s first form of bicycle. Motivated by a transportation crisis after the Tambora eruption, he designed a two-wheeled wooden vehicle propelled by pushing off the ground. On June 12th, he tested it publicly in Mannheim, captivating onlookers. The invention soon gained attention across Europe, despite lacking pedals. The Draisine marked the dawn of personal mobility and inspired the bicycles we know today. 🚴♂️✨
