Suggested Routes. ( Devils Dyke Area )
1. As we ascend the Devil’s Dyke Railway, which is no longer in use, we are treated to magnificent views of the V-shaped valley, Devil’s Dyke. This valley is the largest of its kind in the UK. Our next destination is the historical site of The Dyke Steep-Grade Railway, which used to operate on the north-facing slope from Poynings to the summit of Devil’s Dyke. It is worth noting that in 1894, a cable car used to cross the Dyke ravine.
Our journey continues along the South Downs Way, a stunning trail that spans 160 km from Winchester to Eastbourne. As we traverse the ridge of the South Downs Way, we are blessed with breathtaking views of the sea and a glimpse of the North Downs. We pass the remains of an Isolation Hospital, which was used for smallpox in 1902.
Descending down Truleigh Hill trail, we are delighted by the picturesque villages of Fulking and Poynings, offering panoramic views of the North Downs. On clear days, one can see the entire West Sussex Weald from this vantage point. Don’t forget to check out the spring in Fulking village that never runs dry. For those in need of refreshments, the Shepherd & Dog pub or the Royal Oak in Poynings provide great coffee and refreshments with views of the spring.
As we climb back up the 700ft hill, we marvel at an ancient Flint oven. The ride concludes back at the Devil’s Dyke Hotel, where we can continue our descent back to Brighton via the disused Dyke railway line.
