Hi all, just for fun I’ve been seeing how light I could get my bike. As is, with pedals, it sits at 18.12lb. Not the best scale, but fairly accurate. I’ve taken all my lightest parts and put them on this bike. I know this is a touchy subject, but I’m pretty proud of it. Bear with me while elaborate on how I achieved this weight.
Ive kept it vintage, no carbon fiber. the frame and fork is a De Rosa replica 57, weight is around 6.1lb. Cockpit, SR Royal super something stem, 3ttt superleggero bars. Cotton tape. Saved roughly 150 grams over the cinelli bar and stem that I had on it. Saddle and seatpost are Campagnolo super record post with selle Italia superleggera Saddle. Seatpost has been cut down, saddle is incredibly light for a late 70s saddle. 225 grams. Alloy rails. These saddles are hard to come by. I search the internet regularly for them to get another, and don’t see them. This one came from Australia. 3/4lb lighter than some of the brooks saddles. Brakes. Campagnolo short reach calipers. OMAS bolts and nuts throughout, brake shoes are the alloy versions. The alloy shoes, all 4 combine, are around 45g less than the steel version. Wheels. I built these up myself. Front rim is a mavic argent7 (268g), 15g wheelsmith spokes, alloy nipples, hi-e hub (92g), vittoria speed tubular (200g), titanium skewer. I was shooting for a sub 700g front wheel, but it came to 740g. Rear wheel has mavic record du monde rim. In the catalog/literature, these are listed as 300g. In reality it weighs 345g. Sapim laser spokes, hi-e hub (175g), veloflex tubular (260g), Campagnolo freewheel (145g). The freewheel the star of the show, incredibly light. Although it’s size,13-18, accounts for the low weight. Not the best for hills. I plan on rebuilding the rear with a mavic argent10 to match the front. The drivetrain is where it’s not quite as vintage. Topline crankset, roughly 70g lighter than the Campagnolo crankset I had on it. I love this crankset. The chainrings are titanium I believe? They’re fairly heavy compared to the aluminum/alloy rings. It’s 130bcd so I can get a 38t chainring to offset the the gears. 42t was a low as I could go on the Campagnolo. The bottom bracket says “world class” on it. Don’t know much about it besides it’s weight, 165g. Probably from the 90s? KMC sl chain. Campagnolo super record derailleurs. Super record titanium spindle pedals (260g). 70g less the the steel spindle version, and 150g less then the steel cage version.
A few areas I could drop a little more weight, and get it under 18lb. YBN makes a titanium chain that’s just over 200g. But the price is outrageous. My cable housing is fairly heavy. Compressionless, works great. I think I’d like to keep that as is since it works so good. But I could drop 30g there. Chainrings. I love how sleek the chainrings are on this bike, thin, almost invisible from a distance. I could lose maybe 30-40g there. There it is, 18.12lb
almost forgot, headset. Headset is OMAS, these are pretty slick. plastic bearing cage. this weighed around 100g. 103g, i think, to be exact. The previous campagnolo headset was just under 200g
