I’m 10mo into mountain biking and have been loving it. I ride trails exclusively, without any jumps or significant drops. I’m on a Motobecane (generic brand) hardtail. I’d like to check out a race, although I feel like the initial start of the race and passing other bikers will be a pretty big learning curve though, not sure how to manage that with no experience. I’ve also ridden solo almost exclusively so I really have no idea what I’m doing beyond what I’ve watched on YouTube.

Pretty proud of this ride. I wasn’t pushing hard the entire time, but I included my laps and elevation gain for a better idea of my pace. I did take a ~20min nap a bit over midway through because I got 5hr of sleep the night prior. I think I could’ve done a bit better, but not significantly.

I’m wondering how I’d stack up in a novice/amateur race. I just don’t want to be bringing up the very rear.

  1. Most amateur races will likely have some mechanicals and DNFs, so as long as you finish you’re not likely to be last. But even if you are, it’ll be a great experience and a good tool to measure your progress. My opinion: don’t ever let the fear of losing stop you from trying something fun. Just go into it with goals, instead of expectations.
