Cycle Day 23: Leipzig to Lutherstadt Wittenberg (Germany). 84km. (198vm). Some rather threatening clouds today but that was all they did – threaten. Intermittent sunshine with a bit of a consistent head wind, flat running made for another relatively easy ride. Leaving Leipzig went smoothly, not having any close encounters with trams. Within 6km we were back in the quiet of the countryside. A lot of fantastic cycle paths today as we went through a huge conservation area around a number of large lakes. I’m guessing bird sanctuaries and lots of regrowth vegetation. Beautiful riding. Only problem is the tree roots creating large humps in the paths which are often hidden in the shadows. All OK if standing on the pedals but occasionally not seen and a rather bumpy ride. Broadacre cropping, and more distance between any sign of buildings. Although we probably skirted around a few villages. We’re guessing the hangover from collective farming days pre 1990. Stopped for fresh strawberries to have with our lunch. Quite a lot a pine forest riding which was really beautiful with the filtered sunlight coming in. Yet another interesting old city. It is amazing to ride down a cobbled street and then you burst into the town square. Now we are in the town of Martin Luther – the forefather of the Protestant movement. We never know what to expect at our destination. No disappointments so far. They are all different but so magnificent. Usually with a grandly decorated RatHaus, maybe a church and surrounded by grand old buildings. Usually, the best are bathed in sunlight as we enter the square. Our accommodation has history, spiral stone staircase, lots of old stuff and modern rooms. Bike sheds & awards for being bike friendly.
