Beginner bike mechanic here. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

I have 2015 crave SL. Which I believe is the single speed equivalent to the Crave (2x drive train). Links posted below. I would like to convert it to a 1X geared setup. I'm looking for suggestions for drivetrain components. I don't need the most expensive or lightest. Just practical and durable.

I will be using this bike for a city, gravel, XC.

It came with an e thierteen 36t chainring . Is this single speed only or will I be able to use it for a 1X setup?

What is the widest range cassette with hill climbing gears I can fit on this?

Do all modern derailers have a clutch? If I am looking for used parts I just want to make sure I am not looking at outdated stuff.

I found a compatible derailleur hanger already.

Thanks

  1. If you can attach a derailleur hanger, you should be able to make that setup work.

It won’t hold the chain as well as a proper narrow-wide single speed chainring but it should work.  You might be stuck with 8sp or 9sp though.  It’s unlikely a 12sp chain would fit onto that.

Depends almost solely on what derailleur you get.

No, but most mid-level or above mtb/gravel ones do.  Road stuff doesn’t.  Entry level commuter stuff usually doesn’t either.
