Hi all, wondering if someone could give me some advice. I’m running ultegra 12s di2 and there is very little clearance between the rear derailleur and spokes. Hard one to take a picture of but that’s a 6mm hex head in the photo and I have to squeeze it in, so I’d say there’s 5.5mm clearance max. L limit screw is set as tight as can be without dropping into the next gear down. Could this be a bent hangar or is this completely normal? Much scarier now I have carbon spoked wheels… Cheers!

  1. I mean, it has to be exactly where it indexes with the largest cog, and that’s pretty close to the spokes yea.

  2. Hard to say without having a better look at it, though if you’re on the limit screw and it’s shifting fine, I wouldn’t really worry about it. It’s not likely to flex a lot, any clearance is enough and you’ll hear it tapping on spokes if it’s too close.

  3. That looks absolutely fine to me. In road bikes, I’ve had instances where the clearance was absolutely minimal, like just 1 or 2 mm. Even this didn’t cause any problems during riding.

If there’s contact, it should be around the upper pulley with the spokes rubbing the derailer cage. Most likely all you’ll get is noise.
