Hello,

I suspect there's a defect in the carbon frame of this bike, and I'm hesitating to buy it. I've been offered this 2014 FELT F7 for 700 euros. Do you think I should buy it? It’s pretty well-equipped for the price; the only risk is this defect. I’m not sure if it poses a safety issue. What do you think?

EDIT: Seller's message: "the chain skip didn't damage the carbon; you can really see that it was just the paint that chipped off"

  1. I don’t think I would, the damage does look slightly worse than superficial and I feel like 700 euros is not all that cheap for a bike from 2014 anyway.

  2. Most does look superficial, i am not quite sure what i am seeing with that vertical cut though.

  3. Might be a paint scratch… might be a bloody great hole in the carbon. Is it worth buying? Depends if €700 is an amount you’re prepared to lose.

  4. On a separate note, get closeup photos of the chainrings to assess wear. Could be the angle, but the ones in pic 1 don’t look so good

Either one of 2 things. Maintenance issue and improper setup causing multiple chain drops when shifting down to ther small ring? Or operator error when shifting under load causing the chain to drop on the inside? Either way STOP! you can see there was already issues and looks like it was painted over ans you can add a chain stopper to keep this fron happening!! There are numerous different kinds…

Whether YOU want to buy it is up to you? It may be just an ugly surface issue. Are they forth coming with this issue?

Looks like the damage is to the alloy part of the frame. If so, not such a big deal.

Personally that’s a no from me. Could be totally fine but I’m not a gambling man.

This black thing, is it a hole in the frame and a crack below, or just naked carbon from under the paint? Can’t tell from the photo. If it’s a hole, then it’s a big no.

  9. I’d be a pass. With the limitations of older rim brakes and standards (tire clearance, mostly), that bike is worth half that.

No way. Is there some shortage of good condition used bikes for sale there? That frame has major damage, whether it’s structural or cosmetic is irrelevant. It’s a 12 year old bike with obvious and significant damage. If it were dirt cheap and you were dirt poor and couldn’t afford anything else then maybe.
Walk away. Trying to sell that bike is the current owner’s problem, don’t pay him to make his problem your problem.

  11. Buy an undamaged bike for 700. That is far too much for a meh 12 year old bike with a chunk of paint missing and potentially worse.

    Short answer, no. Don’t buy.

There is a test to check carbon, called coin tap test. Youtube it. Basically, like name says, tap coin and listen sound it makes.

Third, it is on spot heavily reinforced. It is possibly good.

My reactions for no is, I’m not betting man. You do you.

Also, check three times for fitment before purchasing anything.

Envoyez la photo au service client du constructeur et demandez-leur si c’est grave….
