I have had these schwalbe tires for like 3 years now, I'm not a very intense rider so they look pretty ok besides that now these 3 little "dents" (don't know how to call it) are gone. these are the only 3 missing in both tires. Should I get new tires or am I fine with that?

Tks!

  1. Extensive cracking in the tread material, along with loss of adhesion. Perhaps some environmental condition has degraded them. Chemicals where stored, for example. I wouldn’t use them myself except out of curiosity as to whether they’d start rapidly shedding more tread. Were I to do that, I’d carry spare tires!

My God these tires hardly have any tread wear for 3 years. Yes, they need to be replaced because of the rubber rotting but from this little use you might as well sell it

  3. They’re dead Jim. I’ve had those same tires for about two years and not missing any knobs yet. Or have any cracks.

They look so dried and cracked like 15 years old car tires, I wouldn’t trust it’s grip on anything slippery

These tires should be replaced. Soon. At the same time, I’m comfortable saying that because I’m currently employed and the cost of replacing bicycle tires is far less than the cost of a catastrophic failure dumping me on the ground. There have been times in my life where I would’ve kept riding on these tires at least until my next paycheck or until I could find a deal on replacement tires.

I’ve had Schwalbe all round like this for about that long and have not had any of the cracking and popped-off nubbins like yours. Is it stored in the sun? Personally I ride something like this until it fails but would buy backup tires now.

  7. If my car tyres looked like that I’d be changing them straightaway. On a bike, with them being the only thing really keeping me from eating tarmac, I’d change them quicker than straightaway!!

You could fill them in to extend their life, but don’t leave the fabric exposed. I did that with thickened contact glue.

The rubber looks worse than I think it should in that time. Are your tires exposed to ammonia, UV or etherial oils?

  9. I asked my shop when I should replace my tires, they said “when the knobs start falling off.” So yes, I’d say replace them.

  10. If those are only 3 years old I would not buy another set of those again. There’s no reason 3 year old tires should show dry rot like that let alone have nobs literally falling out and exposing the threads.

I’m one to just send it and not worry too much, but these are definitely cooked

  12. You can probably finish them off on the back, but punctures will get pretty likely as more of the knobs leave the chat. Definitely replace the front at the bare mininum if you can afford it.

  13. I had schwalbe tires who also lost random knobs, they replaced them under warranty.

No, just like LED monitors there is a manufacturing norm of up to 3 missing nobbies you‘ll have to accept. Looks like you are still within tolerance.

Yeah they are dried out and cracking but 3 years is decent lifespan of tire. Time to upgrade
