I have this old CCM bike (I believe it's a Mistral from 1973). It has downtube shifters on it currently.

I love the bike but I'm really tired of having finicky gears without many speeds.

does anyone know how much it would cost to have a bike shop add modern gears, ideally on the handlebars, at a bike shop?

if it were me I would turn that thing into a single speed.
Not a true fixie,(unless you know how to ride them you can dump pretty badly), but a free with a set of rim brakes.
Very fun. I did a vintage Bianchi this way, put a tbar and bigger tires.

    OOORRRR

a single front with say a six or 10 rear cassette see what you can do for wheels/tires to turn it into a hybrid graveler/roadie. Did that with a second older Bianchi.

I tend to use Shimano simply because I do a lot of recycling parts and the Shimano system tends to play well within its family. And not super pricey.

    good wishes!
