Hello lovely bike people,
I have a crazy idea to bike across the wonderful USA this summer.
Starting point: Anacortes, Washington
End point: Niagara Falls
The blue line shows the general route I have planned. Basically the west coast down to San Francisco > East towards Phoenix (visit family) > New Orleans (because everyone says it's great) > Charleston, WV (visit friends) > Back up to Canada.
I'm looking for interesting sights along the way. I like everything nature (big trees, botanical gardens, unique geographic features, cool swimming spots, etc)
Other interests include: Bike parks, breweries, odd-little-towns, abandoned places, extreme sports, snorkelling, caves, treehouses)
Any suggestions are welcome! I'll be wild camping/campground camping as much as possible otherwise the cheapest hotel.
Thanks for the suggestion! 🙌🏼🚴🏽♂️

If you pass through Athens, OH. Hmu.
Biking across Texas in the summer?
can I ask what time of year you intend to ride? as I look at this route I can’t think of a time you could start from WA in warm weather, not hit brutal heat in TX, and still have warm enough weather in NY.
In ohio you could stop in Marietta. It is the oldest town in ohio. There is dirt cheap honor system camping at the fairgrounds. ( also a roller rink at the fairgrounds) and is close to the main strip in that town.
Looks like my route when I play ticket to ride
If you shift west a little bit, you can ride the Natchez Trace. Highly recommend.
Having biked across the US this is maybe the worst possible route you could take during summer not only for sight seeing but also for safety. It gets rough even up north in the summer, DO NOT go through the desert alone. I would advise going down to C or D and then cutting west through OR, ID western WY then either head south to CO for the Rockies or go north to SD towards the Badlands and Black Hills.
This isn’t a summer route
Adjust your eastern end slightly and do Natchez Trace northbound (free camping for 440mi), cross Tennessee (Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg will amuse and horrify you) and pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway northbound (again all free camping). I found both those linear Parks a nice relief from the rest of the country. Good luck to you!
Dude, you are going to die in West Texas. You will be unable to carry the amount of water that you need. There is nothing out there, no trees, no water, no phone service, nothing. I only drive a car out there in the depths of winter.
Fuck this is making me sweat.
Wrong season but otherwise a sick route. AZ through TX legit could kill you or at least give you a miserable few weeks if you try it between May and October.
The whole west is in drought conditions and after a winter with very little snow and unusually hot weather so early, I wouldn’t pick this route.
What about go to Glacier NP then Yellowstone, on to Minneapolis, etc? It’s beautiful country — I passed these points biking east to west many years ago.
