With five easy climbs spread throughout and long stretches of flats, this ride offers the perfect introduction to Iceland’s dramatic East Fjords region. Whether you’re building fitness or simply savouring the otherworldly beauty of this remote corner of the world, Stage 1 promises an unforgettable indoor cycling experience.

The ride begins at Lambhús with a stunning view of two massive glacier tongues tumbling down from Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice mass. As you roll onto the main road, the landscape opens into vast, flat plains with the Hoffellsfjöll mountain range rising in the distance and the Hoffellsjökull glacier visible on the mountainside—a uniquely Icelandic panorama that feels both intimate and infinite.

The route takes you across several glacial rivers via sturdy bridges, their waters rushing down from the ice caps above. You’ll pedal through wetlands rich with birdlife before riding along Hornafjörður, a fjord where glacial rivers meet coastal waters in a landscape shaped by ice and time. You’ll continue alongside Skarðsfjörður, a saltwater lagoon connected to the Atlantic.

The ride concludes with a stunning view: Vestrahorn Mountain rising 454 meters from the windswept black volcanic sands of Stokksnes Beach. The jagged peaks create a breathtaking contrast against the dark sands below—one of the most photographed locations in all of Iceland.

Just Add Music
Most cyclists agree that rides like Col du Tourmalet are outstanding, but opinions on music are mixed. So we’ve added no music—instead, we recommend adding your own. It’s simple: mute YouTube, open a browser window, find a music site (Spotify, YouTube, etc.), pick the music you like, and enjoy the ride.
We’ve left out the original audio because noise from passing cars, road vibrations, wind, and the rider’s breathing tend to drown out the natural sounds of the surroundings.
