I bought a used Trek Checkpoint SL5 Gen 2. Love the bike, but one downside is that when I purchased it, a bolt was stuck with the head broken off where you would attach a water bottle cage to the frame.

Ive attempted to extract it using a screw extractor drill bit, but it is still struggling to catch onto the bolt. I’ve applied generous amounts of penetrating oil the past couple of days to try and loosen the bolt but have had no success in getting the bolt to turn out.

Any other ideas to try and get this out? Would love to be able to use two water bottle cages, but am cautious to keep going at it with the drill with the carbon frame. I took the bike into a local shop and they told me they wouldn’t be able to try and get it out either.

Not sure if the hex head is mess up at this point, but I’ve had luck with an old skool impact driver. The vibration helps and since the twist force is generated by hitting it, that forces the bit into the head of the stuck fastener. I wouldn’t go crazy, if all else fails maybe get an old skool waterbottle cage that goes around the frame tube. Good luck!

It looks like you did a good job drilling so that’s a plus. Step up your drill bit size until you get the perimeter thin. Insert your extractor and then heat up the frame around the bolt. Hopefully it comes out!
