I'm solo bikepacking along the Great Glen Way in Scotland in late May and early June. This is my first multi-day adventure on a bike. I'm a little nervous but excited (and grateful for this sub)!

I'm from the US where there's a much different culture around land access. I'm familiar with the outdoor access code, but curious if there is etiquette related to camping or cycling in the highlands that might not be obvious or explicit. Being an American, the last thing I want to do is piss more people off :).

Any other tips/suggestions about bikepacking in that part of the world are welcome, thank you!

  1. Electric-shoe on

Be aware that the Caledonian canal is a historic monument and wild camping along it does not come under the access code. that said, there are excellent free camp spots in various places alongside the canal

  2. Are you looking for advice about dealing with Scots? I’m Scottish so can help if you have questions.

Locals are generally friendly, although you might encounter the odd dick, like anywhere. Don’t be scared to ask for assistance if you need it.

You have the right to roam, so as long as you follow the access code, you’ll be grand. Note that the right to roam doesn’t mean wandering into peoples gardens. But you can quite happily travel over, stop and camp on most land and nobody will bother you. Use common sense.

Try haggis. It tastes great and is good for you.
