On one hand, this is a super sick bike. I have however gathered that it's faults may not make it the best choice for me. Stuff like speed, ease of use, and availability for parts.

I don't have very long commutes and anything is a step up from walking, but I wouldn't want to be stuck with a bike I can't use over damages that couldn't be repaired.

Asking price $275

  1. Idk enough about old bikes to give you helpful advice, but that thing is sick as hell

If you already own it, give it a shot. I would never buy this bike for any reason regardless of the price.

Very cool bike, but would not make a good commuter. There are so many better options from thjs time frame

  4. I’d avoid any suspension for commuting tbh. While that fork and single pivot rear are robust and reliable it’s still going to rob you of efficiency.

  5. IMO, two things:

    * Old bikes that are hard to service should only be gotten if you specifically want an old bike and don’t mind or even like that it’s hard to service. If you want a cheap bike that you’re not planning on throwing away after a single season, then hard pass.
    * Full-suspension MTB with MTB tires is the worst possible bike for commuting unless you live deep in the mountains.

I would not use this for commuting. See if you can find a hybrid, or an 80s – 90s style mountain bike (i.e. no suspension) as they’re pretty similar to modern hybrids. Go affordable but not falling apart, and over time you’ll learn what you like and don’t like and can upgrade from there if needed.

Full suspension and commuting isn’t a brilliant mix. Are there no other bikes available?

That bike is sick AF and wouldn’t flinch to pay $275 for it. I also love old bikes and can do my own maintenance. What does your local bike mechanic think about it?

Interesting assortment of parts…those are 1980s-vintage panniers, for example.

if you’re comfortable rebuilding the suspension and all the pivots, go ahead and buy it.

maybe look into what’s required to rebuild that front shock first.
