Hi all,

I am looking for some advice please on my bike.

I bought this in 2021 second hand so the components were already used then and I’ve done a few 1000 miles on it since. The previous owner upgraded the wheels to Hunt, the rear derailleur to Ultegra and possibly some other parts too.

Ever since I bought it it would never shift into lowest/easier gear (big cog on the rear) which never really bothered me for years as I mostly rode flats in high gear. Recently have started climbing more and it’s really holding me back missing that gear. Fixing this is my priority. It also just doesn’t really shift great in general anymore, can lag on shifts and sometimes will randomly change gears.

Im thinking some of the bits might be due for replacement – chain, cassette maybe the derailleur. The problem is I am not sure where to start with all this! Hence looking for any advice & tips. Happy to spend a bit on upgrades if they’re worth it!

Thanks

Can kindaaaaa depend on specifics because not all ultegra is equal and I’m personally uncertain if/when it has always been 11 speed etc

First and easiest port of call would be watching a GCN video on gear tuning. Specifically cable tension and limit screws.

Normally high and low issues are limit screws related but this is a big gap so I’m not sure.

It’s either going to be – easy peasy tune up that cost nothing and will take ten mins

    Or

The previous owner has put a jumble of parts on that aren’t compatible but have the ‘ooooooo ultegra’ appeal for an easy sell.

    Or it’s bent

Edit – cube attain came with 8sp claris (I think) so the shifters won’t work with 11sp cassette / mech

Google maps, search for local bike mechanic, get them to fix the gears for you. A brilliant mechanic will take the time to talk you through what was wrong with it.

I love, love love my local mechanic. I prefer a bike mechanic to a bike shop, but I have the pleasure of having both options available for me.

And before you know it, you’ll be grinning ear to to ear climbing up them hills on that big cog
