I've received a custom built mtb from around 2001 or 2002. It has pretty nice parts for the time but I'm unsure how to value it now. I am wanting to sell it either as a whole or as parts and it's been difficult to get an idea of what my best options are as someone who isn't part of the cycling/mtb community.

I've attached some pictures but it has these parts:

Cannondale Raven 2000fr Frame
Magura Louise brakes
Head Shok Ultra Fatty front shock
Easton Monkey Lite ct2 handlebars
Fox Air Vanilla R rear shock
Shimano deore xt brakes
Mavic Crossmax wheels
Brand new Gravelking SR tires

I'm sure I missed a few smaller parts as well.

Should I sell this as parts, or as a whole? Any suggestions on how to find a starting value if I sell it as a whole?

    Everyone on this sub will roast you and say it’s worthless. Join a cannondale group on Facebook. There is a (limited) market for these, especially for niche parts that cannondale made outside industry spec. It would be easiest to move complete but if motivated these might be a handful of parts on there that can fetch a decent price for the right collector/project.

  2. I have an old alloy super V, with those same cranks! I asked a local shop when they took trades – answer is what others said, minimal & more for show. They said they’d hang it on the wall if it wasn’t too rough.

  3. I grabbed a ‘98 Super V from a dumpster a few months ago. It’s almost entirely stock, but the only people who like it are fueled by nostalgia.

  5. There are folks who collect this vintage mountain bike gear. Compared to modern bikes, it’s a heavy ass spongy dog, but some folks love the nostalgia.

    Looks like you got a lot of nice collectable parts on there. Those RaceFace Carbon LP cranks were the lightest cranks of their day (and flexy AF. I had a set of those). The fact that the yellow powercoating is intact is highly desirable to the collector crowd, not to mention the 5 bolt 94mm BCD version.

  6. My feeling on these old geometry bikes is they are rideable, but you need to change stuff. Ideally you buy a larger frame than you need and put a short stem on it with wide riser bars. You put disc brakes and wheels on it if possible and rebuild the suspension. Then you put the widest tires that will fit. They really aren’t good for much, but you can make them better than they were. It only costs money and if you already have modern bikes, sometimes it’s a diversion you need to do one more ride in a week because you just want to beat up on people with an antique for the hell of it. I have a lot of old 26’rs unfortunately because I didn’t sell them back in the day. I still ride my Santa Cruz Blur 1st gen that I bought in 2003 I believe. I completely redid it as previously described and it’s still a decent bike that’s fun to ride. I also sometimes ride a 2008 Cannondale Taurine with a carbon Lefty. It’s kinda like when you ride a single speed. If you get dropped, you were on a single speed. If you kick ass, you were on a single speed. It’s a win-win proposition sometimes. Old bikes are the same.

    These come up all the time here. 

    Also those are Magura Clara brakes that have a single piston and the black thing on the inside is to adjust the inner one and it has a screw out on outside to adjust the hydraulic piston.  Absolute garbage and never fit for purpose.  Those should have put Magura out of business just for the balls in offering auch substandard brakes, even for the era.  They may have been Louise, then changed the name when the Louise became double piston.

  9. I tried for like two years to sell my mint vintage Cannondale SE2000, their first rear suspension bike (blk/pink/green) and wasn’t too successful. Even in the vintage FB groups and in here. Wasn’t looking for a ton of money but the general interest wasn’t there. Ended up selling it on FB Marketplace to someone who had no idea what he was buying and said he was turning it into some sort of e-bike or something. Looking back at it, I should have gone back to the shop I bought it from 30+ years ago and gave it back to them as a showpiece. Oh well…
