Cleaned it up nicely the other day but .. Unsure if I should just be purchasing a new one

I can tell there's wear and it was pretty dirty with a nasty worn chain … But idk if it's actually that bad

  1. Yeah I’d go ahead and get a new one if it was me. I can see a lot of wear on your favorite gears. Have I seen worse? Yes. But fresh is better. If you have the scratch, replace it.

  2. Yes the chain and cassette needs replacing,
Make sure you cut the new chain to size ,check park tools on YouTube on how to size a chain correctly.
This is often missed by experienced people, all chain lengths are different depending on chain ring sizes etc.

  3. It looks worn but still usable. Are you having shift issues?

Honestly a new deore cassette is like $45 and it’s not hard to replace. But this looks fine imo.

  4. Yeah best way to tell is measure the chain that’s on it , if that’s worn enough you cassette is probably done to , it does look like you have a tooth broke if the 10 tooth cog

If you rode around on a severely worn chain, it may be done but there really is no way to tell just from looking at it. You simply can’t tell if a cassette is worn that way unless it is extremely far gone.

There’s a simple test, though: Put on a new chain, and if it skips and jumps under power, then you need a new cassette.

  6. You can’t visually inspect for cassette wear. Don’t listen to people telling you the “shark fins” are worn. Those are part of the design. Google search an image of same cassette new and you’ll see same shape.
