Dear all,

got a good deal on some Ultegra 50/34 chain rings. I wanted to switch anyway from my current 52/36 to get a wee bit more head room on climbs.

I also have a brand new chain to go with the rings, but I’m not sure if new chain should be 1-2 links shorter than the current one. Pic is 52/36 and 11-30.

Thx!

I think you’ll be fine to leave it as is. Your current chain already looks like it’s on the shorter end of acceptable.

Yeah that chain is too short with the 52/36 anyway, im surprised you can even ride big/big. The 50/34 should be fine with that chain.

  3. Seems like that smaller chainring is what you need to make the chain the right size. Perfect!

It would be easier to assess whether the chain will be too long with the new smaller chainrings if you had put it on the smallest sprocket and chainring instead of the largest. your current chain looks to be on the short side, so i think it will be fine. If it needs to be shorter, you can remove the links from your current chain. Theres is no need to replace the chain until it is worn, just because you are changing chainrings.
