Went to a bike shop about 2 weeks ago with tires that had some visible cracks on them. Wanted to replace them with similar looking ones but the guy didnt have any and told me the tires i came in with still look like they have some life in them. Should I be riding with tires like these??

Trash that, before it trashes you.
Geez.
I would replace
Don’t go back to that shop
Firstly, those tyres are dangerous, secondly, what shop doesn’t stock 700x28C tyres?
Just curious, was this a professional bike shop? If yes, that’s definitely not the place to go back to.
These are done for and should be replaced ASAP. Not by that shop though, if they really do think those tires have plenty of life left, I don’t wanna know what else they think is still ok to ride.
The second picture shows the inner tuber is already pushing through the wall of the tire which is definitely not a good thing.
Is the name of the shop Satan Cycles? Those tires have negative 357 miles left in them.
Your bike needs a new shop
This bike has been sitting under the sun for a long time: the sidewalls look baked ffs. New tires required.
Sure until one blows out. Those are pretty dry rotted.
That shop be like “if you can’t buy from me, you don’t need to buy from anyone else”. The cracks alone are tough to judge – I might still ride them but keep an eye on them. But the hole in the second pic is a red flag – as someone pointed out these had negative miles left in them.
All depends on what you told the bike shop you’re doing with those tires.
If you’re a regular sized person and you’re just cruising around your neighborhood at low speed you will be totally FINE with those tires. A flat tire is the worst that will happen to you.
That being said, it would be totally reasonable to replace those tires and I’m surprised the bike shop didn’t want to take your money.
Its one thing to have some light cracks on the tire. These look like gashes lol. Put some new ones on.
😬 ummm..
Whoever told you that is an idiot of the first degree.
That tyre is waiting for the opportunity to fail spectacularly and introduce your face to the road.
nowww that’s done for.
Please replace! And take black tires, coloured ones are more fragile
The sidewall is dead, jim
New tire cheap vs dental bill.
That second picture is death on wheels, surprised it hasn’t already gone through the side wall. If you hear a bang in the night it’s probably that .
100% dead. I’ve helped stranded riders boot stuff like that a dozen times on the greenways around here. Those tires are absolutely rotten. The cheapest Chen-Shin tires at Walmart are a thousand times safer.
I’m less concerned about dry rubber than i am about the nylon casing.
Is it the nylon casing that is the structural foundation of the tire. the rubber is the wear and tear portions. Sidewall rubber is needed to protect the nylon casing from cuts and UV damage.
That said, your second pic shows a bulge as a result of damage nylon casing.
the one long crack that sits between the tread and the sidewall is a the first place where age will begin to show. if you can dig a fingernail into the rubber and it doesn’t flake off, then the rubber has not reached maximum fatigue
As far as dry rubber is concerned, its far more advanced than the average aged tire, but the rubber will not all of a sudden fly off the tire,
traction is from the tread. I am more concerned with gaps and crack in the tread. i am less concerned about side wall cracks….this aint a car tire, so don’t apply car tire practice to bike tires.
I am aware than this is a very UNPOPULAR bit of knowledge, but i am not concerened about popular opinion, I’m more concerned with helping teach people what is actually happening and the true makeup of a bike tire.
that being said… hey u/charlesfromdacrypt , change your tire. there is a split in the nylon casing. its time.
Hell no, even when I was flipping bikes I wouldn’t have let one go with that tire.
That shop should get a nice Google review: “5 stars for making my life more exciting by not replacing a tire that needed replacing awhile ago”
I’m not good with titles.
Do they have a dentist attached to their shop by chance?
You can actually ride a bike for quite a long time with tires like these. Bikes are not like cars. I would swap them out though but its mostly becasue it would cost me nearly nothing and there also is something wrong with my brain.
I saw the zoomed out photo and was focusing on the tread left. I was thinking “crikey these comments are a bit dramatic”. Looked at the photo closely and saw THE HUGE SPLIT IN THE SIDE and agreed with you guys.
Normally it’s the customer who says something so ridiculous.
If you want life left in you, ditch them. Also buy the tires online and change them yourself. The best advice I ever got from a shop was learn to the basics yourself and bring it to use for major things. He said your bike will be in here every two weeks. Jokes on him though cause I stripped my bike down and rebuilt the entire thing.
Those need to be thrown out pronto. I would also avoid that shop, because they clearly don’t don’t have a clue.
It puts the lotion on the skin or it gets the hose again
Nah, I would of told you you need new ones. and you do. Weird service advisor lol
Dude, those are waiting to desintegrate while going downhill at speed. If you even make it that far. Time for a new shop if they suggested those were good to use.
