The Sidford to Sidmouth cycle path refers to a popular, family-friendly off-road route in East Devon, UK, primarily known as The Byes cycle route (or The Byes riverside path).
This is an easy, traffic-free shared path for cyclists, walkers, buggies, and scooters, following the River Sid through the scenic Byes Riverside Park. The Byes is a key green space in the area, consisting of meadows, fields, and a nature reserve managed in part by the Sid Vale Association to promote wildlife and public access. The River Sid is Devon’s shortest river, just over 6 miles long.
Key Details
• Distance: Approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) one way.
• Start/End Points: Typically from near Sidford Social Hall (postcode EX10 9QX, close to the Salty Monk restaurant area) in Sidford, running to The Old Tollhouse or near the playground/seafront in Sidmouth.
• Surface: Tarmac/paved path, making it suitable for families, young children, and those with buggies or mobility needs.
• Features: It passes through pretty parkland with meadows, trees, and river views. At the Sidmouth end, it connects to a playground, toilets, cafés (like the Mocha Café), and the beach/promenade with views of the striking red cliffs. It’s dog-friendly too.
• Suitability: Ideal for leisure cycling, beginners, or a relaxed ride/walk to the seaside. The path is mostly flat and follows alongside the river—navigation tip: stick to the river once you join it, as signage can be limited in places.
Many describe it as a delightful, short route that feels like a green corridor into Sidmouth, with options to extend slightly by starting further north in Sidford.
Note that this is distinct from separate proposals for a Sidford to Sidbury cycle/footpath (along the A375/Two Bridges Road), which is a different, longer scheme further north that’s been in consultation/planning stages (with a Phase 1 focus from Sidford northward, but not directly to Sidmouth via that route). The established Sidford–Sidmouth path via The Byes has been well-used and recommended for years, appearing in Visit Devon guides and local family activity write-ups.
If you’re planning to visit or ride it, it’s a great way to enjoy the area’s natural beauty without road traffic! For maps or more details, check resources like VisitDevon.co.uk or apps like Komoot/AllTrails, where users often share related routes in the Sidmouth area.
These observations are what this ride is all about. So hop on, come along, and let’s enjoy another awesome cycling adventure!

Hi Harvey, well I've said it before and I'll say it again you have great patience which is a virtue, your a great example to other cyclists and it proves pedestrians and their dogs and cyclists can work together to make their shared paths safe, great video and thanks for caring to do the sharing Harvey ✅👍👏👋🚲
Hi Harvey, I had my first ride on the Creo today, what can I say, absolutely fantastic. It's every bit as good as I thought it would be and more, so smooth and really fast off the mark – and that's with the motor off..!! I can see how much you enjoy riding your Creo, now I own one myself, I understand why! What a bike – Happy cycling, Dave
I’m presuming this was a weekend due to the amount of folk on the path. It’s a pity the cycle path isn’t wider as it seems there is space. I’ll have to give this path a go sooon. Nice video.
Plenty of activity that morning bud, and your patience and common decency wins through as ever. I always like to stop and greet the dogs too.
Taking one of my Defys out later. I remember watching one of your earlier videos where you were praising the DT Swiss wheels. I've still got them on my 2017 Defy to this day ! Great recommendations and ride safe pal 😎👍
